Discovery Place Science Announces New Adult Programming to Enhance Lineup Led by its Popular Science on the Rocks Series
Science Studio, Science on Screen and The Speakeasy will join the Museum’s award-winning, after-hours adult programming series in 2024

CHARLOTTE, NC (February 20, 2024) – Discovery Place Science is building upon its adult programming to offer more options for adults to experience the Museum after hours in a kids-free environment. New to Discovery Place Science are Science Studio, a rotating series bringing together inquisitive minds for an informal evening of thought-provoking conversations, and The Speakeasy making its debut in June. The Museum will also welcome the return of its popular Science on Screen series, which pairs expert-led discussions on scientific topics with screenings of feature and documentary films.
“Discovery Place is always looking for new ways to deliver our mission, and we’re excited to connect with even more adults through these programs in 2024,” said Heather Norton, Chief Science Officer of Discovery Place.
Science Studio
Science Studio’s inaugural event will take a deep dive into the topic of wellness on Thursday, February 29 from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. More dates will be added throughout the year in addition to those outlined below. Tickets are $22 for General Admission and $18 for Members.
- Science Studio: Wellness will feature aerial and fitness demonstrations, meditation and art therapy, healthy food demonstrations and community wellness experts. Tickets are available online at Discovery Place Science here.
- Science Studio: Stellar Revelations, April 11 from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. is more than your average stargazing event, where programming will take a deep dive into the James Webb Space Telescope and the images and discoveries it’s generating today. The event will also offer an immersive planetarium experience and guest speaker. Additional details and tickets will be available soon.
Science on Screen
Using film as a medium to inspire thought-provoking conversations that both educate and entertain adult audiences, Science on Screen returns to Discovery Place Science in 2024. Each of the following film screenings will take place in the Discovery Theatre and begin with a 20-minute, expert-led talk. Tickets are $14 and will be on sale soon, with additional films TBA.
- Apollo 13 | April 5, 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. — discussion centered around space and stars
- The Breakfast Club |May 10, 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. — exploring relationships, including topics surrounding longevity and connection
- Short Circuit | June 1, 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. — all about AI
The Speakeasy
In the spirit of Macabre Masquerade, which was introduced in October 2023 and will return this fall, The Speakeasy encourages guests to dress up for an evening of adult science exploration set to a theme. Blending the clandestine charm of a 1920s speakeasy with the science behind alcohol and the artistry of mixology, The Speakeasy invites guests to step back in time for an evening exploring libations with local tie-ins to the Prohibition Era.

Additional Adult Programming at Discovery Place Science
Uptown’s biggest recurring social event, Science on the Rocks, will continue monthly to give adults exclusive, after-hours access to Discovery Place Science—dates through May are listed below. In addition, the Accenture IMAX Dome Theatre will feature newly released Hollywood feature films, including Dune: Part Two, premiering February 25, documentaries, and planetarium shows throughout 2024.
