New exhibit opens November 22, included with museum admission and free for members

CHARLOTTE, NC (October 9, 2025) – This winter season, for the first time, Discovery Place Science invites visitors to step into a glowing, snow-dusted wonderland with the debut of Snow Days, a one-of-a-kind, all-ages exhibit opening Saturday, November 22 and running through the winter holidays.
Produced in-house by the Discovery Place team, Snow Days is a fully immersive experience designed to inspire awe, nostalgia and wonder during the winter season. From the moment visitors enter the exhibit, Snow Days signals a shift from the everyday museum experience. Snowflakes fall across projection-covered walls and footprints appear in the “snow” beneath visitors’ feet, setting the scene in this exhibit that explores winter through light, science and storytelling.
“Winter is a season that lives deeply in human memory and emotion. With Snow Days, we wanted to create a place where visitors of all ages could be transported into a world unlike any other in Charlotte,” said Catherine Wilson Horne, President & CEO of Discovery Place. “Whether it’s families making new memories, friends marveling at the Northern Lights or children pretending to be Arctic explorers, Snow Days is a reminder of the joy winter brings when we share it together.”
Highlights of Snow Days:
Aurora Borealis Experience – Walk beneath the dazzling Northern Lights in a peaceful winter scene. It’s a moment of stillness and awe in the heart of the exhibit.
Sock Skating Rink – A frictionless skating experience for all ages. Visitors slip off their shoes and glide along the rink, joining a fun-filled winter tradition—no ice required!
Nature & Animals in Winter – Get up close to non-living museum specimens like the Arctic fox, Humboldt penguin and snowy owl, and discover how different species adapt to the cold through migration, hibernation and more.
The Inuit: Life, Culture and Survival – Build a traditional-style igloo and explore fascinating artifacts and stories of resilience from Inuit communities who have thrived in Arctic climates for generations.
The Snowflake: Research, Art and Folklore – Marvel at intricate snowflake photography, design virtual snowflakes and explore how snow has inspired both science and storytelling across time.
Hygge: Human Comfort for Survival – Relax in a cozy nook styled after the Danish and Norwegian tradition of hygge, celebrating the warm side of winter with soft lighting, music, blankets and books.
