CHARLOTTE, NC (April 16, 2026) – Discovery Place Science invites people of all ages to become builders, designers and creators in a brand-new pop-up experience, Boxopolis: A Creative Cardboard City, running April 27 through May 10, 2026 at the Museum. This hands-on community project encourages visitors to explore their creativity and imagination in a shared space, working together to design and build a cityscape using recyclable materials and inventive tools.

Boxopolis is an opportunity for our community to build something together by bringing ideas and innovation to the table,” said Dr. Nikki Hill, Chief Learning Officer at Discovery Place. “With each person’s participation and contribution, this collaborative cardboard city transforms day by day into a vibrant, shared expression of our community’s creativity and spirit.”

Inside Boxopolis, visitors can:

  • Collaborate and co-create — Work with friends, family and fellow visitors to build structures and creative installations using cardboard and recyclable materials.
  • Experiment with materials — Engage hands-on with simple, everyday materials to explore design, problem-solving and artistic expression.
  • Grow a living community project — Contribute to a space and experience that evolves each day.

Boxopolis is for visitors of all ages and skill levels. Tools and materials will be provided on site, with museum staff available to guide safe and inspired building.
